Playing pickup basketball is a fun and informal way to enjoy the game. While there may be some variation in rules based on local customs, here are some commonly accepted rules:
Basic Rules

Team Size: Usually played with 3-on-3 or 5-on-5 teams, but it can vary.

Court: Games can be played on a full court or half court, depending on the number of players.

Scoring:
- Inside the Arc: Typically 1 point.
- Outside the Arc: Typically 2 points (or 3 points, depending on the court).
- Free Throws: Usually 1 point.

Game Duration:
- Timed Games: Often played to a specific time limit (e.g., 20 minutes).
- Point Games: Games can be played to a certain score (e.g., first team to 11, 15, or 21 points) * Games will tend to be shorter if other people waiting

Possession:
- The game often starts with a jump ball or a coin toss. *Always starts with a player from either team “Shooting for it,” if they make it they get possession.
- After a basket, the opposing team gets possession.

Checking the Ball: After every dead ball (foul, out of bounds, etc.), the ball must be “checked” by passing it to the defender before play resumes.

- Common fouls include pushing, holding, and hitting.
- Depending on the setup, players may call their own fouls, or a referee may be appointed.

Out of Bounds: The ball is out of bounds if it touches the ground outside the lines or if a player steps out of bounds.

Substitutions: Players can substitute in and out at stoppages in play, but it’s polite to wait until a dead ball. *Typically people waiting will shoot at the conclusion of game to play the current winning team
